What Jesus Can’t Do

When you first meet someone you learn their name but you only know who they are and the significance of their name once you get to know them.

In Jesus’ Name

Christians understand that the name of Jesus is powerful. Scripture is clear that we are to pray in Jesus' name (John 14:13-14) and there is no other name in which men are saved (Acts 4:12). For those who do not know God, Jesus is a great place to start.

The name of Jesus is powerful and in Mark 16, Jesus, Himself said in His name those who follow Him will cast out devils, speak with new tongues, take up serpents, lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. There are many things Jesus can empower us to do but there are also some things Jesus can not do.

In the sermon series, The Real Jesus, Pastor Julie Signorelli taught V1 Church the importance of getting to know Jesus from the things He can not do as well.

1. Jesus Can Not Lie

“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will He not fulfill it?” – Numbers 23:19

“Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for He is not a man, that He should have regret” – 1 Samuel 15:29

“So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” – Hebrews 6:18

As the scripture says from the Old to New Testament God does not contradict Himself. The real Jesus is the same all throughout. It is impossible to trust someone if there is any sign that they could be lying to you. It’s imperative for a believer to be assured that Jesus is not a man that He should lie.

Guard yourself from some of the lies about God or faith mentioned below:

  • There are many ways to heaven – Wrong – There is only one way to the Father and that’s Jesus (John 14:6)

  • Jesus accepts anything – Wrong – Narrow is the gate and the way is hard (Matthew 7:14)

  • Jesus is mad at me – Wrong – For God so loved the world that He gave (John 3:16)

  • I have too much sin – Wrong – Your sins as far as the east is from the west. He is faithful and just to forgive. (Psalm 103:12)

2. Jesus Can Not Change

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” – Isaiah 40:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” – Hebrews 13:8

“You are the same, and your years have no end” –Psalm 102:27

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” – Revelation 22:13

In these times, modernity will say to do away with biblical commandments and catch up with the times. There are laws being created that justify sin but even that will not prohibit God’s glory from coming into the world. As Matthew 7:14 says, narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Just because times are changing that does not give the follower of Jesus passage to mix secular things with sacred things. “You can not mix calamity and the holy reverent presence of God,” Julie declared.

What a person does in secret, when alone reveals what is really inside of them. Christians who walk down the narrow gate understand they do not just do whatever they want and still worship God. For those walking in darkness, the wage is death.

Jesus does not change, He was in the beginning and always will be. Believers can not separate Jesus and His word (John 1:1).

3. Jesus Can Not Leave Things Dead

“As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep. Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, arise.’ And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. ” – Luke 7:12-15

“When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.’ The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’” –John 11:43-44

When you follow Jesus' ministry when he walked the earth it is recorded that He went to a funeral there was usually resurrection. Pastor Julie’s last point of the things Jesus can not do, was to serve as a reminder that Jesus had compassion for the things that are dead in the life of His believers. If we get to know the real Jesus and put Him on the throne today what's dead in us will come out of the tomb as well.
