The True Meaning of the Blood of Jesus

There is profound spiritual significance in Jesus' blood. The blood of Christ has power over evil and is the atonement for believers' sins.

In a sermon titled, “The True Meaning of The Blood of Jesus” Pastor Mike Signorelli taught V1 Church the real significance of the blood of Christ. He highlighted three qualities of the blood that serve as protective and redemptive signs for the Christians.

Why A Blood Sacrifice?

Leviticus 17:11 shares the purpose of having a blood sacrifice to atone for one's sins. The scripture reads."For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.” Before Jesus died on the cross as the ultimate sacrifice to atone for our sins, scripture instructed the Jewish people to sacrifice a spotless lamb, and that animal’s pure blood would be a propitiation to save humanity who was tainted by sin and bad decisions.

Pastor Mike pointed out that before Christ called God “Heavenly Father,” God was known by the people of Israel as the “righteous judge.” Knowing God as “judge” made righteousness and unrighteousness easier to weigh. So if sin occurred a penalty would have to be paid because a righteous judge holds a standard of right and wrong. Today, in a lawless generation, atonement can be hard to embrace because there's so much entitlement but the Jewish people understood that a price needed to be paid for their sins.

However, Animal sacrifices were simply a temporary atonement. God would send His only begotten Son Jesus to die on the cross and shed His blood to atone for the sins of all mankind. John 1:7 says: “...The blood of Jesus, His Son cleanses us from every sin.” The process of applying Jesus' blood is likened to the ancient biblical practices involving the lambs and hyssop, symbolizing testimony.

Many churches often declare salvation is free, but it was made free to us because Jesus paid the price for the sin of the world. Nothing is free, someone always pays a cost and Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is what makes salvation free for believers. Animals are governed by instinct not free will. Humans, unlike animals, have intellect and can choose to sin; biblical teachings urges us to have control over base instincts. Just because one feels the desire to lust we are taught to flee from immorality.

What is the Blood of Jesus?

1. The Blood is a Sign

In the Old Testament (Exodus 12:13) God told the Israelites to put the blood of a lamb on their door post so that a plaque of death would pass-over their homes. God was not concerned with their religious works at that moment, as long as they were covered by the blood they would be spared. Today, God is still looking to see the blood of Jesus covering believers not your religion.

Pastor Mike explained that the blood of Christ will produce cleanliness in a person. Having a revelation of the power of the blood and embracing that sacrifice will cause a Christian to transform. One can not really be clean without the blood, we must make a decision to apply the blood of Jesus in our own lives.

In Exodus, the instructions were given to the head of the home, the men. The V1 Church leader encouraged men to set the precedent for their families concerning the blood of Christ regardless if they had a good example of men or not.

2. The Blood is a Sound

There are always two sounds – First, the sound of satan: gossip, complaining, back-biting, murmuring, fault-finding. The second is the sound of salvation: prophesy, decrees, and declarations. Christians are to know the sound of the kingdom.

The sound of salvation contrasts with the sounds of death and sin. Revelation 7:9,10 says: “After this, I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.’”

Believers are prophetically seen in the Bible as part of a multitude worshiping the Lamb. Jesus is the ultimate Lamb, providing a permanent sacrifice, unlike the continual sacrifices of animals. Believers will wear white robes, symbolizing purity and victory, in eternal worship.

In Revelation, we read that Angels worship God though they did not have a need for redemption through the blood of Christ. Humans praise God for the grace and redemption received through Jesus' blood. The mention of Jesus' blood causes demons to tremble, highlighting its spiritual significance and power.

3. The Blood is a Sanctifier

The blood of Jesus washes us clean. Hebrews 9 contrasts the temporary purification of animal blood with the eternal purification of Christ's blood. Pastor Mike emphasized the importance of actively applying the blood in the believer's life rather than leaving it unused. The transformative and victorious power of the blood of Jesus provides spiritual protection and sanctification.

There has to be an exchange. Covering yourself with the blood of Christ is the price paid for the penalty you deserved. Without a payment for sin there can be no justice.
