7 Reasons Why The Church Fails

For the Christian, Jesus is the ultimate leader but it is also imperative to know that leadership in the church, with Jesus as the true leader, is very vital to a believer's development.

Examine the Early Church

There is a great need to stay true to the Church's original purpose. A study of Acts 2 verses 42–47 highlights key points of a healthy church. The original design of the church was committed to the apostles' teachings, fellowship, and prayer. Through scripture, we see the need for adhering to the Word of God rather than personal opinions or clever illustrations.

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day-by-day those who were being Saved.” – Acts 2:42-47

In modern Christianity, it is important to study the areas we fail in, to live out what God originally intended. The first reason churches fail is because they are losing sight of the church's original purpose such as worshiping God, making disciples, and serving others. Failures of the church when it comes to love and unity stem from embracing worldly values. The tendency to turn to the world shows the great need for love in Christ and discipleship. The issue is many people seek teachings that cater to personal desires rather than sound doctrine.

As we examine Acts 2 we also can see the importance of outreach and generosity in the church. There is healing power in serving others. Accountability within the church is another integral part of the early church, as we see in Paul’s example and teaching (1 Timothy.) He teaches that open rebuke is necessary to instill the fear of God, preventing chaos and ensuring leaders are held accountable. Furthermore, adapting and overcoming personal and communal challenges is necessary to have a healthy church. Pastor Mike teaches that the church fails when it resists change. He recounted a personal struggle of his with poverty because of his upbringing and his need for adaptation once God delivered him from it. Trusting in the Holy Spirit within others in the church, will lead to a healthy community and to growth. The following is a list of the seven reasons churches fail.

The Church Fails When:

  1. We lose sight of the church's original purpose (Act 2: 42-47)
    • The early church’s commitment to teaching, fellowship and prayer serves as a timeless blueprint for effective ministry today.

  2. When we fail to love and unify (John 13:35)
    • Love and unity are essential for church effectiveness.
    • Genuine love and unity among church members strengthen the body of Christ, enabling more impactful outreach and community service.

  3. When the church embraces the world values
    • The church loses its effectiveness when it prioritizes cultural trends over biblical truths, compromising its mission.
    • Preaching the Gospel boldly helps confront societal issues, even at the cost of discomfort, leading to genuine transformation.

  4. When we neglect sound doctrine
    • “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” – 2 Timothy 4:3-4

  5. When we neglect outreach
    • Addressing past wounds through community support allows for healthier relationships and a more vibrant church life.

  6. When we lack accountability (1 Timothy 5:19-20)
    • Accountability and adaptation foster personal growth.
    • Engaging in accountable relationships within the church promotes spiritual growth and helps believers navigate challenges together.

  7. When we fail to adapt
    • Embracing a simple, trusting faith can reinvigorate our spiritual lives, allowing for greater openness to God’s workings in us and through us.

In closing, pray for alignment with God's will and embrace true church community.
