Why You’re Always Tired (And How to Stop Sowing to the Flesh)
Why You’re Always Tired (And How to Fix It)
Right now, three out of four people report feeling unusually tired. You wake up exhausted, drag yourself through the day, and lay awake at night wired but tired. You’ve tried changing your schedule, cutting caffeine, or taking a vacation, but that heavy passivity won't lift.
You aren't just tired because you're busy. You are exhausted because you're laboring in strategies born of your own flesh and demanding that temporary things satisfy your eternal soul.
You are exhausting yourself by putting eternal expectations on temporary things.
Stop Calling Your Flesh a "Busy Schedule"
Let's get brutally honest right here. You keep blaming your job, your kids, or the economy for your burnout. But if you sit quietly for five minutes and let the Holy Spirit search your heart, you'll realize the truth: your burnout is a harvest.
In Galatians 6:7–8, Paul doesn't mince words: "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life."
You are sowing to the flesh every single day, and then you complain when you reap corruption, anxiety, and fatigue. "The flesh" isn't just obvious sin—it’s self becoming its own source. It’s you trying to manufacture by human effort what only God supplies by grace.
Look at where you're putting your weight:
Your Career: You grind 60 hours a week hoping a promotion gives you an identity. But your job is temporary—Paul was a tentmaker on earth, but there are no tentmakers in heaven.
Your Finances: You stack money thinking wealth equals security. Money cannot buy peace, cure disease, or save your soul.
Your Relationships: If you think you have to sleep with someone to get them to accept you, you are with the wrong person. Stop exchanging eternal value for temporary affection.
Your Success: Success without spiritual grounding will crush you under the weight of maintaining what you built in your own strength.
When a good thing becomes an ultimate thing, it becomes a crushing thing.
The Night Nicodemus Showed Up Unannounced
In John 3, a religious leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus under cover of night. On paper, he had everything: status, biblical knowledge, respect, and influence. Yet he wrestled with an internal restlessness so intense he couldn't sleep.
Jesus looked right through his title and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God... That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:3, 6).
Whatever is born of the flesh is corruptible and temporary, but whatever is born of the Spirit is eternal. When God births something, favor carries it. But when your flesh births something, you have to break your back trying to sustain it.
Ten years ago, I sat in a parking lot in Michigan and looked at my wife Julie. I was ready to quit. I told her I wasn't going to New York and we weren't going to plant V1 Church. I tried to cancel my calling because I was scared and tired. But God stepped in and made it clear that V1 Church wasn't my idea—it was His.
When God starts a work, no devil in hell can stop it. But when you build an empire out of panic, you become a slave to your own creation. Stop asking God to bless strategies He never told you to start.
Ishmael is what happens when you try to force in the flesh what only faith can produce.
Run This Four-Question Diagnostic on Your Life
If you want to know why you're drained emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually, run your recent decisions through these four diagnostic questions right now:
Was this decision birthed in prayer or panic?
Was it birthed in obedience or insecurity?
Was it birthed in surrender or control?
Was it birthed by faith or a desperate need to prove yourself?
If your decisions are born of panic, insecurity, control, and self-proof, stop wondering why you feel like you're drowning. You built a life out of the flesh, and now you're exhausted keeping it from collapsing.
An 82-year-old member at V1 named Caleb recently told me his secret to getting a 100% sleep score every night. Before he closes his eyes, he prays: "God, today I gave my best, now You give me rest." He stopped trying to be his own source. He realized that God gives His beloved sleep, while self-reliance only produces sleepless nights.
Favor is the proof that it wasn't your idea in the first place.
Stop Watching from the Sidelines—Step Into the Fire
I didn't write this to make you feel bad; I wrote this because I refuse to let you settle for a passive, powerless Christianity. You were not created to drag yourself through life in survival mode.
You can be physically tired from working hard, but spiritually ablaze with the fire of the Holy Spirit. One of our V1 members was dead tired after a long week. He put on khakis and dress shoes and walked into Planet Fitness anyway. Because he yielded to the Spirit instead of his tired flesh, he talked to a young guy in the parking lot who had just attended our V1 service that morning. Right there, he led him to Christ and cast out demons!
Kingdom purpose doesn't drain you—it revitalizes you.
So drop the excuses. Repent for making idols out of your career, your relationships, and your control. Commit to three non-negotiable actions:
Go to Church: Stop isolating yourself behind a screen when you can be present. Show up in person. Your worship and presence carry power that can break depression off the person sitting next to you.
Build the Church: Bring your time, your talents, and your tithe. Stop giving God leftovers and start bringing your first and best to build something that outlives you.
Be the Church: Stop acting like a saint on Sunday and a skeptic on Monday. Take the authority of Jesus into your office, your school, your family, and your neighborhood.
Decide today that you are done striving in the flesh. Surrender your plans to the Holy Spirit, step into your God-given authority, and let Him give you supernatural endurance.
